04 days: Drakensberg + Lesotho (from Durban)

Visit the Kingdom of Lesotho travelling via Sani Pass, the Drakensberg Mountains, view bushman paintings, enjoy scenic hiking trails and explore the Midlands Meander.

From Durban at sea level, we’re going to take you way, way up the highest, most challenging vehicle pass in the country to the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho, and treat you to a lunch at the highest pub in the world! We’re in the heart of the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains, a vast World Heritage Site, not only proclaimed such for its extreme beauty, but also for the historic 2 000 year old San – better known as bushman - paintings found in a Cave. It’s a gentle walk to the Cave, once home to South Africa’s earliest inhabitants...and for those who enjoy hiking, we’ve allocated time for you to pursue your hobby in these exquisite surroundings. On Day Four, our return trip to Durban is via the lush, green Midlands Meander region, filled with quality arts and crafts enterprises, and we’ll certainly stop off there for a little local shopping.

Day 1: Durban - Sani Pass – Lesotho - Drakensberg (LD)
We leave Durban by 6.30am this morning heading towards the village of Underberg at the foot of the mountains. Here we transfer to 4x4 vehicles and begin climbing the highest vehicle pass in Southern Africa. The views from Sani Pass are utterly spectacular and invariably make a lasting impression on first-timers. At the top is the border post between South Africa and Lesotho, thus passports are a must. Once inside Lesotho we visit a Sotho tribal village, and interact with the local people before enjoying lunch at the highest pub in Africa. Perched right near the edge of the mountain, it has few rivals in terms of pub views. Thus fortified, we wind our way back down the mountain and spend the night in a nearby hotel.
Accommodation: Drakensberg Gardens or similar

Day 2: Drakensberg Mountains (BD)

Morning at leisure to enjoy the spectacular views of the Southern Drakensberg mountains before we continue to the most beautiful spot amid these ‘dragon’ peaks, the World Heritage Site of Giant’s Castle. Spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying the stunning scenery and fresh mountain air.
Accommodation: Giant’s Castle or similar

Day 3: Drakensberg Mountains (BD)
After breakfast, we set off on a leisurely 3km roundtrip hike to the caves (average level of fitness required), which were once home to South Africa’s earliest inhabitants, the San people, better known as Bushman. Enjoy a guided tour of the rock paintings, which remain on the cave walls as clues to their simple existence. Spend the rest of the day at leisure, or take to the mountains again for an afternoon hike.
Accommodation: Giant’s Castle or similar

Day 4: Drakensberg - Midlands Meander - Durban (B)
After a final leisurely morning, we make our way to Durban via the quaint art and craft stores and farmer's markets of the Midlands Meander Route, arriving in Durban late afternoon where our tour ends.
