Day 1
Kulala_bedroom_and_viewUpon arrival in Windhoek you will be transferred via light aircraft to Kulala Desert Lodge for two nights. Leaving the central plateau in our wake we descend to the Namib Desert floor, en route passing the magnificent peaks and crags of the Namib-Naukluft mountain range, the west-facing escarpment of the interior plateau.

Located in the Namib Desert on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve, Kulala Desert Lodge provides convenient private access to the iconic dunes of Sossusvlei and consists of 15 thatched and canvas “kulalas” with en-suite bathrooms and verandas, and a rooftop deck for those who want to sleep under the stars. Each is built on a wooden platform to catch the cooling breezes. The main area has a lounge, dining area, plunge pool, and deck overlooking the ephemeral Tsauchab River. A waterhole attracts a variety of local wildlife and provides a perfect location to view and photograph desert scenery. Desert-adapted wildlife is sparsely distributed, such as ostrich, springbok, gemsbok, and predators such as spotted hyena and the occasional brown hyena as well as bat-eared fox, black-backed jackal, porcupine, Cape fox and aardwolf. Activities include early morning guided nature drives to the world-famous dunes of Sossusvlei, nature drives and walks on the private reserve, or an excursion to Sesriem Canyon. You will be transferred by light aircraft to Doro Nawas Camp for two nights. Described in the official tourism board of Namibia as “Liberating, Soulful and Rugged” there is simply no finer way of witnessing these attributes of Namibia than from the air. You’ll pass over some of Africa’s finest landscape scenery: the fog-shrouded Skeleton Coast to the west, ephemeral rivers, fairy circles and shifting sands. Weather depending, you may see the striking Spitskoppe (1800m) and the looming hulk of the Brandberg, at 2579 metres Namibia’s highest mountain and alleged to be second largest massif after Australia’s Uluru (Ayers Rock).

Doro_Nawas_CampDoro Nawas Camp rests on a sparse, rocky knoll in the breathtaking Aba-Huab River Valley within the 407 300ha Doro !Nawas Conservancy. 16 natural walled units combine a clever mix of local stone and canvas walls with wood and glass, shaded by a thatch roof. Each unit has a bedroom, en-suite bathroom with outdoor shower and a spacious veranda for stargazing or sleep-outs. The main building, with indoor and outdoor dining areas and pool, is perched on a small hill providing an unspoilt panoramic view of the rugged Damaraland landscape. A varied and surprising assortment of desert-adapted species such as the unique desert-adapted elephant, gemsbok, kudu, springbok, steenbok and occasionally the rare desert-adapted black rhino can be seen as well as excellent birding.

Carnivores include brown hyena, bat-eared fox and black-backed jackal. Activities include guided game, nature drives and walks enabling one to explore the Huab and Aba Huab river systems, or view Africa’s largest collection of petroglyphs – prehistoric rock engravings and Bushman rock art – at Twyfelfontein, Namibia’s first World Heritage Site. Other geological wonders to be seen are the Petrified Forest, Burnt Mountain and Organ Pipes.

You will be transferred by light aircraft to Andersson’s Camp for two nights. As we return to the interior and the game-filled scrub savannah surrounding the unmistakable Etosha saltpan, our route will take us over the catchment of the Huab and Aba-Huab riverine systems. These ephemeral river systems are significant subterranean aquifers; in the dry season desert-adapted elephants scrape the sand to access up-wellings, thereby providing access to all creatures dependent on surface water. Also known as “ribbons of life,” the drainage lines are clearly visible as they tortuously twist and turn ever-westwards, only to peter out in the shifting sands of the Namib Desert.

Andersons_Camp_-_tent_interiorAndersson’s Camp (named for Charles Andersson, Swedish explorer of Etosha) is located on the private 30 000-hectare Ongava Game Reserve, south of Etosha National Park’s Andersson Gate. The camp is set against the backdrop of the low Ondundozonanandana Mountains. 20 tented guest units of stone, canvas and wood are elevated and radiate outwards from the renovated old farmhouse that forms the main area, all overlooking a waterhole. Between Etosha and Ongava, there is plenty of wildlife to see, such as springbok, gemsbok, wildebeest, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, elephant, red hartebeest, giraffe, eland, and Burchell’s zebra. Predators include lion, leopard, and cheetah; unusual species include Damara dik-dik and the endemic black-faced impala. Ongava is a custodian of both black and white rhino and bird life is prolific, with over 340 species to be seen – amongst them 10 of Namibia’s 14 endemic bird species. Activities include self-drive or guided game drives into Etosha, with guided walks and night drives on Ongava Reserve also an option.

Upon arrival at Andersson’s Camp, there will be a welcome drink and camp orientation. Your guide will advise and discuss with you the activities available to ensure you enjoy and experience everything the area has to offer.

You will be transferred via light aircraft back to Windhoek for your onward journey. On our flight to Windhoek, we travel for the most part over commercial ranches. This is the ‘tamed’ Namibia, beef and goat production a significant contributor to the small nation’s GDP, vying with tourism as the second largest. In the last decade tourism took over third position from the fishing sector. Extractive resources remain the dominant economic activity, diamonds already famous and uranium, to feed the world’s escalating energy demands, rapidly closing into second position. It’s also worth looking out for the Waterberg Plateau, an important breeding station for rare and endangered species such as sable and roan antelope and finally the Omatakos (2680m), a wonderfully symmetrical pair of hills bearing an unmistakable resemblance to a well-endowed member of the fairer gender. By now we descend to begin final approach to Windhoek Airport and the end of an extraordinary journey.
