This 3 day tour takes you on safari in open safari vehicles in the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi 'Big Five' Game Reserve and gives you a glimpse into the life of the traditional Zulu.

Heading north from Durban, we have the vast Hlulhuwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve in our sights – this is the oldest reserve in South Africa, one world-renowned for its historic conservation of the then nearly extinct white rhino. It’s home to the Big Five, as well as more rare sightings such as wild dog and the elusive cheetah. We track game in 10-seater open safari vehicles, so you have unimpeded views of the terrain, the wildlife and, of course, nobody blocks that perfect Kodak moment as the lion approaches… Our leisurely boat cruise on the St Lucia Estuary – part of the World Heritage Site, Greater St Lucia Wetland Park (iSimangaliso Wetland Park) – also promises to provide clear sightings of giant crocodiles and hippos. Our tour takes in Veyane Cultural Village, where we spend time learning about the Zulu way of life; we watch traditional dancing, and skilled craftsmen weaving baskets and making beads. There’s so much to experience in this corner of Kwazulu Natal, and if you haven’t captured the Big Five in digital format, you’ll certainly have captured it all in your heart.

The Zulu's to this day retain a great deal of the 'old cultural' customs and beliefs, which often feel completely 'alien' yet fascinating to the western world.

Day 1: Durban - St Lucia - Hluhluwe (D)
We depart Durban by 8.30am, arriving at Mtubatuba in the late morning, where we meet our guide. We change vehicles and transfer to Veyane Cultural Village where we will have the opportunity to learn more about the culture of the local Zulu people. We watch and have the opportunity to join in on bead making, mat weaving, and the playing of local instruments. Following our cultural experience we head into St Lucia before enjoying a boat cruise on the St Lucia Estuary part of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park (iSimangaliso Wetland Park), a World Heritage Site, with the opportunity of viewing hippos and crocodiles, African fish eagles and other birds. Following the boat cruise, we continue to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve (BD)
A full day's game viewing awaits in an open game viewing vehicle in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. This Reserve is renowned for its rhino conservation and is home to the 'Big Five' plus an abundance of other animal species including zebra, giraffe, cheetah and wild dog. We depart early morning with breakfast packs prepared and undertake our game drive early when the animals are most visible and active.

We also visit the reserve’s renowned Centenary Centre and the Museum, which depicts the history of live game capture and translocation of game, especially the white rhino that would no doubt be extinct without the creation of this reserve.. There may be an opportunity for a close-up encounter with an animal or two in the capture bomas (enclosures), awaiting their big move to other reserves. Return to the lodge in the late afternoon.

Day 3: Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve - Durban (B)
Early wake-up for a final safari within the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. We return to our lodge in time to check-out and connect onto the transfer shuttle back to Durban, arriving in the city at about 4pm.
